Job Description - Physician Assistant III / Diabetes (3314175) The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. The PA III performs additional leadership and project responsibilities in the team/department. Essential Functions (Key Role and Responsibilities) Works collaboratively with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Diabetes team, including BWH inpatient diabetes consult service (Diabetes Management Services (DMS)) to provide direct care, counseling and teaching to patients with all phenotypes of diabetes. Performs complete histories and physical examinations. Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a select patient population in both the ambulatory and inpatient settings as needed. Provides 1 weekend every 4-6 weeks of inpatient consultative service. Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including initial consultation and progress notes. Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests. Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings. Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures. Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population. Physician Assistant IIIs will also perform additional duties, including but not limited to: precepts a medium sized group of student learners; onboard and train new APP team members; work closely with the Director of Acute Diabetes on QI projects; serve as APP member on BWH diabetes subcommittee of Pharmacy and Therapeutics; present and attend monthly APP Grand Rounds; attend weekly diabetes clinical huddles and present quarterly on updated hospital protocols; spearhead inpatient recruitment activities in diabetes clinical trials; work closely with the Chief APP office to ensure that all APP guidelines and protocols for the hospital as it relates to both diabetes and endocrine are up-to-date. Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all policies and standards. Minimum Requirements Master's Degree, PA required. Certified Physician Assistant with 6 years of experience required. Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
