Today, CHA serves more than 120,000 primary care patients during more than 300,000 annual visits. Services are available at 13 primary care centers, 3 teen health centers, via telehealth, and through some very special programs, right in patient homes. As a member of CHA Primary Care, you will be part of a dynamic team that values creativity and innovation. You will help deliver care across the entire spectrum of primary care – with internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, and women’s health services. You will be in a team-based setting, where primary care works hand-in-hand with behavioral health, pharmacy, complex care, and multilingual interpreter services. CHA is also a teaching hospital, with several primary care centers hosting CHA’s Harvard Internal Medicine residency and Tufts Family Medicine residency. Summary: The Primary Care Lead Medical Assistant takes a leadership role within the primary care site to facilitate safe, efficient, and quality care to our patients. The Lead Medical Assistant demonstrates effective problem-solving and excellence in patient care, and works collaboratively with the Nurse Practice Administrator and other site leadership. Medical assistants are essential members of the team-based care delivery model in primary care. They provide clinical support to both patients and providers to ensure that the patient’s health care needs are addressed, while also contributing to the smooth operation of the clinic by facilitating patient flow. Responsibilities: • Promotes a positive work environment through role-modeling effective communication and interpersonal skills. • Facilitates patient flow throughout the clinic. • Actively participates in the MA EPIC Super User meetings and shares updates with MA staff. • Ensures the documentation of necessary safety and regulatory checks (i.e., weekly eye wash station checks, daily temperature logs, QC of lab equipment) have been completed. • Assists in the scheduling of required training sessions for MA staff and ensures staff attendance. • Actively participates in new MA orientation and training, and works collaboratively with the Nurse Practice Administrator to ensure that basic skill and competency requirements are met. • In collaboration with the Nurse Practice Administrator and RN charge nurse, assigns lunch and break times. • Collaborates with the Ambulatory MA Trainer and Clinical Manager to identify training needs. • Assists with the roll-out of new initiatives. • Identifies and helps resolve clinic staff and operational issues. • Supports teamwork and generates a positive attitude between front and back office staff. • Rooms patients and participates in basic MA duties to facilitate flow during busy clinic days and as needed. • Other duties as assigned. • Actively and efficiently manages the flow of patients through the clinic: • Pre-visit chart medical record preparation and information gathering to optimize the visit. • Participates in team huddles and team meetings. • Rooms patients: • Assists providers with medical histories. • Appropriate documentation in the electronic health record. • Checks routine vital signs and point of care testing (based on patient’s reason for visit, age and diagnosis). • Performs screening questionnaires and pain score, as needed. • Updates computerized reminders and snapshot. • Reviews and updates overdue health maintenance and open orders. • Actively communicates with patients to set expectations, e.g., wait times, what to expect during visit. • Provides clear and timely observations to providers regarding patient issues. • Manages room cleaning, stocking, set-up, and turnover. • Books screening tests as part of the outreach process (e.g., mammograms, colonoscopies) and occasionally books follow up appointments (e.g., well child visits, vaccine booster visits). • Participates in proactive population management of chronic diseases by generating My Chart messages, sending templated letters, and calling patients by telephone. • Tracks completion of certain patient tests. • Participates in shared medical appointments, including recording history and findings into the electronic health record. • Participates in the education of students and residents by explaining the MA role and allowing observation of their work for training purposes. • Participates in process improvement initiatives. • Participates in staff meetings, MA meetings, and continuing education sessions. • Assists co-workers in their duties within the limitations of training and scope of practice. • Other duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Graduation from an accredited medical assistant program. • Licensure/Certifications: Maintains current AHA or ARC Basic Life Support certification. • Linguistic Capabilities: Ability to write and verbally communicate in English. Knowledge of a second language preferred. • Work Experience: Minimum of 3 years experience as a Medical Assistant preferred. Minimum of one year administrative duties in a clinical setting preferred.
