Who We Are: The Electromechanical&Optical Systems Department of the Applied Physics Division at Southwest Research Institute conceives, develops, designs, and delivers specialized custom electrical, mechanical, and optical hardware system solutions to benefit the government, industry, and the public. Objectives of this Role: Spearhead the design, development, and implementation of innovative electrical, mechanical, and optical systems and automated solutions tailored to customer requirements. Lead the integration of mechanical, electrical, optical and software components to enhance system functionality and performance. Provide expert guidance and leadership to engineering teams, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages innovation and efficiency. Lead complex projects, ensuring designs meet client specifications and industry standards. Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering department, leveraging cutting-edge technologies and engineering practices. Daily and Monthly Responsibilities: Design and develop electro-mechanical components and systems using CAD tools like SolidWorks, ensuring all components are precise for low volume fabrication and testing. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers, scientist, machinist, programmers, and technicians to ensure cohesive project execution. Periodically visit customer to assess needs, solution integration challenges, and provide technical solutions, enhancing customer satisfaction and system reliability. Lead and mentor early-career technical staff, providing technical guidance and support as needed. Prepare detailed project documentation, including design files, assembly instructions, and system performance analyses, ensuring comprehensive records and client deliverables. Requirements: Requires a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering 10 years: Experience in mechanical design, with a strong focus on systems, robotics, controls, and automated systems. Multi-discipline is a plus. 10 years: Proficient in SolidWorks, ANSYS, and PTC Creo; experience with Visual Components is a plus. 10 years: Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects on time and within budget. 10 years: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working with diverse teams and clients. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
